Imamate of Aussa

1577 – 1734
SultanateAfrica

Successor state to the Adal Sultanate, founded when Imam Muhammad Gasa relocated Adal's capital from Harar to the Aussa (Awsa) oasis in the Afar lowlands to escape Oromo pressure on Harar.

Weakened after the Harari broke away to found the separate Emirate of Harar in 1647; around 1734 the Mudaito Afar dynasty under Data Kadafo overthrew the ruling Harla-descended line, ending the Imamate and founding the (already-canonical) Sultanate of Aussa under Mudaito rule.
