The quiet farming island of the gulf, settled from Louisbourg and swollen with Acadian refugees fleeing the British mainland.
Captured in the Île Saint-Jean Campaign of 1758; thousands of its inhabitants were deported to France, many drowning when transport ships sank. Ceded to Britain in 1763, it became St. John's Island and later Prince Edward Island.
