Hwicce

577 – 780
KingdomEurope

An Anglo-Saxon kingdom of the West Midlands, established after the Battle of Deorham in 577 and covering roughly modern Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, and southwestern Warwickshire, with its own line of sub-kings and, from 679/680, its own bishopric at Worcester.

Became a client, then fully subordinate, sub-kingdom of Mercia after the Battle of Cirencester in 628; its royal line faded out by around 780 as the territory was absorbed into direct Mercian rule.
