The 'southern people' of the Chilean lake country and Chiloé, who joined the great 1598 uprising that swept the Spanish out of the lands south of the Biobío.

Held their forests against Spain for centuries, lost much land in the 19th-century Chilean settlement of the south, yet endure as a large Mapuche-Huilliche population around Osorno and Chiloé today.
