Massive Preceramic ceremonial mound and midden complex on Peru's north coast (Chicama Valley, part of the El Brujo Archaeological Complex), built up over millennia by fishing and early cotton-farming communities and renowned for elaborate twined textiles with indigo dye.
Occupation and ceremonial use declined gradually as the regional economy shifted toward agriculture; nearby mounds (Paredones, El Brujo) eclipsed it in importance, and later ceramic-period Guañape, Cupisnique and Chavín-linked sites developed at the adjoining Monticulo Cupisnique mound.
