Hotak Dynasty

1709 – 1738
DynastyAsia

Afghan Ghilji dynasty founded by Mirwais Hotak at Kandahar in 1709; his son Mahmud captured the Safavid capital Isfahan in 1722 and briefly ruled much of Iran before Nader Shah broke Afghan power in the 1730s.

Afghan rule over Iran was ended by Nader Qoli Beg (later Nader Shah), who drove the Ghilji out of the Iranian heartland by 1729–1730; the dynasty's rump at Kandahar under Shah Hussain Hotak fell to Nader in 1738, and the Hotaki line was extinguished as a ruling house.
