Destroyed c. 720 BCE by Neo-Assyrian king Sargon II, who razed the city, executed or flayed its king Ilu-Bi'di (Jau-Bi'di) alive, and repopulated it with 6,300 Assyrian settlers after the city led a failed Syrian revolt; Hamath was thereafter incorporated as an Assyrian province.
