Habsburg Spain

1516 – 1700
KingdomEurope

The composite Spanish Monarchy under the Spanish branch of the House of Habsburg, formed when Charles I (Holy Roman Emperor Charles V) inherited the crowns of Castile and Aragon in 1516; at its 16th-century zenith it ruled the Americas, the Low Countries, Portugal (1580-1640), Italian territories, and the Philippines, and produced the Spanish Golden Age.

Charles II died without an heir on 1 November 1700, ending the Spanish Habsburg line and triggering the War of Spanish Succession; the Bourbon claimant Philip V was confirmed on the throne by the 1713-1715 Peace of Utrecht, beginning Bourbon Spain.
