Maratha successor state of the Scindia (Shinde) dynasty on the Malwa plateau of central India. Grown from a jagir granted to Ranoji Scindia in the 1730s, it became under Mahadaji Scindia the dominant Maratha power in Hindustan before entering British suzerainty after the Anglo-Maratha wars.
Survived as a 21-gun-salute princely state under British suzerainty after the Third Anglo-Maratha War (1818); acceded to the Dominion of India in 1948.
