Gujarat Sultanate

A wealthy, seafaring Indian Muslim sultanate founded when Zafar Khan (later Muzaffar Shah I), the Tughlaq governor of Gujarat, declared independence from Delhi; it reached its zenith under Mahmud Begada with a navy contesting the Portuguese at Diu.

Conquered by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1573; a brief restoration attempt by the last ruler Muzaffar Shah III in 1583 was crushed by Akbar's general Abdul Rahim Khan-i-Khanan.
