Chibchan-speaking cotton weavers and farmers of the Chicamocha Canyon (Vélez to Bucaramanga), famed for fine cotton mantles traded with the Muisca and Chitareros, led by village caciques under a paramount leader.
Conquered in 1540 by Captain Martín Galeano; the paramount leader (Guanetá in the English Wikipedia article; Spanish-language sources give Guanentá) died rather than be captured, and a subsequent revolt led by Chanchón was crushed. A small self-identified Guane population (~812 in the 2005 census) persists today around Barichara and Guane.
