Greuthungi

360 – 400
CultureEurope

A Gothic people of the Pontic steppe between the Dniester and Don rivers, associated archaeologically with the Chernyakhov culture and closely linked to their western neighbours the Tervingi. Ruled by King Ermanaric until the Hunnic invasion of the 370s broke their power.

Shattered by the Huns in the 370s; part of the group under Alatheus and Saphrax crossed the Danube in 376 alongside the Tervingi, fought at Adrianople (378), and settled in the Balkans by 382. The Greuthungi/Tervingi naming fell out of use shortly after 400 as the group's identity merged into the emerging Ostrogothic/Visigothic Roman-settled Gothic populations.
