Spanish governorate seated at Asunción, created by the 1617 division of the Río de la Plata governorate — the isolated up-river province whose creole self-rule tradition foreshadowed Paraguayan independence.
Absorbed into the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata in 1776–82 as the Intendancy of Paraguay; the province declared independence from both Spain and Buenos Aires in 1811.
