Not an ending: Gila Apache bands were forced onto the Mescalero and San Carlos reservations through the 1870s and 1880s, and the last free bands surrendered in 1886. Descendants continue today as enrolled members of the Mescalero Apache Tribe, the San Carlos Apache Tribe, and the Fort Sill Apache Tribe (the Chiricahua exile community) — three nations already on this map — rather than under a surviving 'Gila Apache' land base of their own.
