Persianate Tajik dynasty from the mountainous Ghor region of central Afghanistan that overthrew Ghaznavid rule and then, under Muhammad of Ghor, conquered the Delhi-Ajmer region of North India (defeating Prithviraj Chauhan at Tarain in 1192), laying the direct groundwork for the Delhi Sultanate.
Rapidly extinguished after 1206 by the rising Khwarazmian Empire in its Central Asian heartland, while its Indian conquests passed to its Mamluk general Qutb ud-Din Aibak, founder of the Delhi Sultanate (1206).
