North Germanic tribal people of Gotaland in southern Sweden, attested by Jordanes (as 'Gautigoth') and Procopius, and famously the people of the hero Beowulf in Old English epic; long a rival power to the Svear of Svealand to the north.
Gradually merged with the Svear into a unified Swedish realm across the Viking Age and into the early historical Kingdom of Sweden (already tracked in the dataset from c. 800/872 CE onward), losing separate political identity by the 12th century though the Gotaland regional/cultural identity persisted.
