Ganden Phodrang

1642 – 1959
TheocracyAsia

Theocratic Tibetan Buddhist government established in 1642 when the 5th Dalai Lama was granted spiritual and political authority over Tibet by the Khoshut Oirat lord Gushi Khan; the last independent/autonomous Tibetan polity before incorporation into the PRC.

Effective authority ended with the 1951 Seventeen Point Agreement incorporating Tibet into the People's Republic of China; nominal Ganden Phodrang governance in Lhasa continued in reduced form until the 1959 Tibetan uprising and the 14th Dalai Lama's flight into exile, after which the PRC dissolved the Tibetan local government entirely.
