French Somaliland

1884 – 1967
ColonyAfrica

A French colony on the Gulf of Tadjoura in the Horn of Africa (French: Côte française des Somalis), established from earlier French treaty footholds (Obock, from 1862) and centred on the port of Djibouti from 1894.

Renamed the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas in 1967 following a referendum on continued association with France (rather than joining independent Somalia) - a naming/status change, not a conquest.
