French Equatorial Africa was formally dissolved when its four constituent territories became independent in August 1960: Chad on 11 August, Central African Republic on 13 August, Republic of the Congo on 15 August, and Gabon on 17 August; the federation had already ceased functioning after the September 1958 French Community referendum.
