French Cameroon

The larger, eastern portion of former German Kamerun occupied by France from 1916, formalised as a League of Nations mandate in 1919/1922 and later a UN trust territory; administered as part of French Equatorial/West African policy while retaining separate status.

Became the independent Republic of Cameroon on 1 January 1960, the first of France's African trust/mandate territories to gain independence.
