Free City of Danzig

A League of Nations-protected city-state comprising the Baltic port of Danzig and ~200 surrounding localities, established by the 1919 Treaty of Versailles; bound in customs union and foreign policy to Poland while remaining formally separate from both Poland and Weimar Germany.

Unilaterally annexed by Nazi Germany on 1 September 1939 at the outset of the invasion of Poland; became the Polish city of Gdańsk after WWII.
