Charles de Gaulle's rival government-in-exile ('Free France', from June 1940) that rejected the Vichy armistice and continued the fight alongside the Allies; reorganized in Algiers as the French Committee of National Liberation, then as the Provisional Government of the French Republic, which took power in liberated Paris in 1944 and governed until the Fourth Republic's constitution took effect in October 1946.

Superseded on 27 October 1946 by the promulgation of the constitution of the French Fourth Republic.
