Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland

1953 – 1963
Sovereign stateAfrica

Also called the Central African Federation: a semi-autonomous British colonial federation joining self-governing Southern Rhodesia with the protectorates of Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland, created to balance settler and African political interests but dissolved amid African nationalist opposition and the three territories' separate paths to independence.

Dissolved on 31 December 1963 after years of African nationalist opposition (notably from Hastings Banda in Nyasaland and Kenneth Kaunda in Northern Rhodesia); its three territories became independent Malawi (1964), Zambia (1964), and continued as Southern Rhodesia/Rhodesia.
