Federal State of Austria

1934 – 1938
Sovereign stateEurope

The authoritarian, corporatist 'Austrofascist' one-party state proclaimed by Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss's 'May Constitution' (1 May 1934), which abolished parliamentary democracy and direct elections in favor of appointed corporatist councils under the sole legal party, the Fatherland Front — a blend of conservative, nationalist, corporatist, and Catholic influences opposed to both liberal democracy and Nazism.

Dollfuss was assassinated in a failed Nazi coup attempt on 25 July 1934 and succeeded by Kurt Schuschnigg. Under sustained pressure from Nazi Germany, German troops crossed into Austria on 12 March 1938; the following day, 13 March 1938, newly installed Chancellor Arthur Seyss-Inquart decreed the Anschluss, formally annexing Austria into Nazi Germany — the atlas's existing Nazi Germany record covers Austria from this point.
