The Fante Confederacy collapsed in 1873 when British colonial authorities arrested its leaders and suppressed its council; it was formally dissolved in 1874 when Britain proclaimed the Gold Coast Colony, incorporating Fante lands into British territory; the 1871 Fante Constitution (an attempted self-governing union) had been suppressed.
