Falkland Islands

1833 – present
ColonySouth America

A British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic, self-governing since 1985 with the UK retaining responsibility for defence and foreign affairs. Sovereignty over the islands is disputed: the United Kingdom has administered them continuously since 1833 (aside from the 1982 Argentine occupation during the Falklands War), while Argentina claims the islands, which it calls the Islas Malvinas, as part of its national territory.
