The Gondarine period (1632–1769) ended when Ras Mikael Sehul deposed Emperor Iyoas I on 7 May 1769 and had him killed about a week later, marking the start of the Zemene Mesafint (Era of the Princes) during which Gondar's imperial court became a figurehead controlled by regional warlords.
