Epirus (ancient kingdom/koinon)

370 BC – 167 BC
KingdomEurope

Ancient northwestern Greek kingdom (later a federal koinon) famous for King Pyrrhus, whose costly victories against Rome (280-275 BCE) gave rise to the term 'Pyrrhic victory'.

The monarchy ended in 232 BCE and Epirus became a federal republic (koinon); Rome dissolved it after the Third Macedonian War (167 BCE), enslaving an estimated 150,000 Epirotes.
