The main Byzantine successor state founded after the Fourth Crusade's sack of Constantinople in 1204, which preserved Byzantine imperial traditions in western Anatolia until Michael VIII Palaiologos recaptured Constantinople in 1261 and restored the Byzantine Empire.

Ceased to exist as a separate polity in 1261 when Nicaean forces under general Alexios Strategopoulos recaptured Constantinople from the Latin Empire, restoring the Byzantine Empire under Michael VIII Palaiologos.
