Denianke authority grew 'increasingly tenuous and nominal' over the 17th-18th centuries as its animist Satigis ruled an increasingly Muslim Fulbe population and faced Moroccan-backed Moorish raiding and French trade competition on the Senegal River; in 1776 the Muslim cleric Sulayman Bal led a revolution that overthrew the Denianke and established the Imamate of Futa Toro (the already-canonical futa_toro record, 1776-1861) in its place.
