Empire of Brazil

1823 – 1888
EmpireSouth America

The only enduring monarchy in the Americas, a tropical empire ruled by the Braganzas from Rio de Janeiro that held the whole Portuguese inheritance together as its Spanish-speaking neighbours splintered into republics.

Overthrown by a bloodless military coup on 15 November 1889 that deposed Pedro II and proclaimed the republic; the imperial family sailed into European exile.
