Berber Islamic emirate in Morocco's Rif region, founded in 710 CE by Salih I ibn Mansur under an Umayyad Caliphate grant. Ruled continuously by the Salihid (Banu Salih) dynasty from the coastal settlement of Temsamane and then the river-valley capital of Madinat al-Nakur, it is generally regarded as the first autonomous Muslim state in the Maghreb and adhered exclusively to Sunni Maliki Islam.
Prospered on trans-Saharan and Mediterranean trade despite repeated sackings: a major Viking raid in 859, Fatimid attacks in 917 and 934, and an Umayyad-backed Miknasa (Berber) assault that burned the city in 931. Sources disagree on the precise end of Salihid rule (one account has the dynasty ending c. 1015), but the Wikipedia lead states the emirate 'ended with the destruction of its capital city Nekor in 1080'; the Rif was subsequently absorbed into the Almoravid state and later the Almohads and Marinids.
