Independent Sunni emirate of the upper Amu Darya (Panj) headwaters ruled by the Yarid dynasty, whose mirs claimed descent from Alexander the Great; a mountain buffer between Bukhara, Afghanistan, and the Kashgar oases, famed for its lapis lazuli and ruby (balas) mines.

Conquered by the Emirate of Afghanistan in 1873; the last mir became a pensioner of Kabul and power passed to an appointed Hakim.
