Lowland Gulf city of carved scrollwork and as many as twenty ballcourts, crowned by the Pyramid of the Niches whose 365 recesses mirror the solar year.

Burned and abandoned around 1230, traditionally blamed on invading Chichimec; the surrounding Totonac later reoccupied the region but never rebuilt the great center.
