Capital of the Late Classic Maya kingdom of Talol in the northern Yucatán, renowned for unusually well-preserved stucco reliefs and the tomb of its ruler Ukit Kan Lekʼ Tokʼ inside the site's largest pyramid; because so few other northern-lowland cities preserve comparable detail, Ekʼ Balam is a key source for understanding this era's northern Maya cities.
Population fell to roughly a tenth of its peak during the Postclassic and the city was gradually abandoned; a 16th-century Spanish colonial account records the region later passing to the Cupul lineage.
