Egba (Abeokuta)

1830 – 1914
ConfederationAfrica

Refugee confederacy of Egba townships under the Olumo rock, which beat off Dahomey twice and kept a recognized independent government until 1914.

The loose Egba confederacy was formalized as the Egba United Government, recognized by the Lagos Colony governor; its independence — long protected by treaty, including the boundary agreement signed at Abeokuta on 5 January 1894 — was extinguished when Egbaland was absorbed into the amalgamated Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria in 1914.
