The Eastern Zhou ended in 256 BCE when the state of Qin captured the Zhou royal capital and the last Zhou king, King Nan, was killed shortly after his submission to Qin; the remaining Zhou dukedom of East Zhou was extinguished in 249 BCE when King Zhuangxiang of Qin completed the conquest, after which Qin went on to unify China as the Qin dynasty in 221 BCE.
