550 – 1100
Sovereign stateAsia

Mon Buddhist network of city-states in central Thailand that first transmitted Theravada Buddhism across mainland Southeast Asia.

Declined and fragmented in the 11th century CE under sustained pressure from Khmer expansion eastward, with Khmer forces gradually absorbing Dvaravati territories and Mon principalities losing autonomy; the polity effectively ceased to exist by the mid-11th century.
