Dutch West India Company trading colony along the Gold Coast, founded at Fort Nassau (Moree) in 1612 under the 1612 Treaty of Asebu and centered from 1637 on the captured Portuguese castle at Elmina; regulated relations with the Ahanta via the 1656 Treaty of Butre, and competed with English, Danish, and Brandenburger forts for the gold and later slave trade.
The Dutch Gold Coast fell into disarray after the Dutch abolished their slave trade (1814); on 6 April 1872, under the Anglo-Dutch Treaties of 1870-71, the Netherlands ceded all remaining Gold Coast possessions, including Elmina, to Britain, which absorbed them into the (already-canonical) Gold Coast Colony.
