A Lombard duchy in central Italy centered on Spoleto, founded alongside Benevento as one of the two great semi-independent southern Lombard duchies, controlling much of Umbria and the Marche.
Lost real independence after Charlemagne's conquest of the Lombard Kingdom in 774 but persisted for centuries as a Frankish, then Imperial and Papal fief, before final absorption into the Papal States in the early 13th century.
