Duchy of Parma and Piacenza

Northern Italian duchy created for Pier Luigi Farnese by Pope Paul III in 1545; ruled by Farnese then Bourbon-Parma dynasties until Italian unification.

Abolished in 1859 when Bourbon-Parma authorities fled after an uprising; merged into the United Provinces of Central Italy by December 1859 and formally annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia by plebiscite on 11 March 1860, becoming part of the Kingdom of Italy proclaimed 17 March 1861.
