1395 – 1797
DuchyEurope

Powerful northern Italian duchy under Visconti then Sforza; a major Renaissance state and pivot of Franco-Habsburg rivalry in Italy.

Annexed by Holy Roman Emperor Charles V in 1535 as a vacant imperial fief after the last Sforza duke Francesco II died heirless, ending the independent Duchy of Milan; it passed to Spanish Habsburg then Austrian Habsburg rule before being absorbed into Napoleon's Cisalpine Republic in 1797.
