Duchy of Mantua

1530 – 1797
DuchyEurope

Gonzaga-ruled duchy in Lombardy; a leading Renaissance cultural centre known for artistic patronage and music, partitioned by Savoy and Habsburg in 1708.

Partitioned in 1708 between the House of Habsburg (which received the city of Mantua itself) and the House of Savoy (which received the remaining Montferrat territories) after Emperor Joseph I deposed the pro-French Gonzaga duke Ferdinando Carlo, ending nearly 380 years of Gonzaga rule.
