Duchy on the Franco-German border in the Upper Rhineland; coveted by France and the Habsburgs, it was finally annexed by France in 1766.

Annexed by France on 23 February 1766 upon the death of Stanisław Leszczyński, who had held the duchy under a prior arrangement stipulating it would revert to the French crown on his death, ending Lorraine's existence as a distinct territory.
