Duchy of Friuli

568 – 776
DuchyEurope

The first Lombard duchy established in Italy, founded immediately after the 568 conquest under Duke Gisulf I, guarding the Lombard kingdom's northeastern frontier against the Avars, Slavs, and Byzantines from its capital at Forum Julii (modern Cividale).

Absorbed into the Carolingian Empire after Charlemagne's conquest of the Lombard Kingdom in 774; its last Lombard duke, Hrodgaud, was deposed after a failed revolt in 776, and the territory was reorganized as a Frankish march.
