Stem duchy of East Francia / the medieval German kingdom, emerging in the early 10th century from formerly Frankish core territory. One of the five duchies whose dukes elected the German king (Duke Conrad of Franconia became King Conrad I in 911).
Fragmented after the death of Duke Otto of Franconia in 918 into ecclesiastical and comital lordships (Würzburg, the Rhenish Franconian counts); the ducal title was later revived in a reduced form and finally extinguished in 1168.
The atlas holds 4 border frames for Duchy of Franconia — the shape you scrub through changes in 906 · 1025 · 1050 · 1085.
No dedicated Franconia monograph found on Open Library; same verified English-language survey used as a fallback for the Swabia record, covering the same German-kingdom era and institution (the stem duchies).
