Duchy of Croatia

700 – 925
DuchyEurope

An early medieval Croat polity established in the former Roman province of Dalmatia after White Croat migration and consolidation against the Avars. Its dukes ruled from a succession of seats (Nin, Klis, Solin, Knin), balancing Byzantine and Frankish/Carolingian overlordship through the 8th-9th centuries.

Duke Branimir won papal recognition as an independent ruler in 879; the duchy was elevated to the Kingdom of Croatia under Tomislav around 925.
