Duchy of Courland and Semigallia

Baltic German duchy and Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth vassal; briefly maintained a colonial empire with possessions in Tobago and Gambia under Duke Jacob Kettler.

Annexed by the Russian Empire on 24 October 1795 as part of the Third Partition of Poland, when the duchy's Landtag pledged allegiance to Russia and Duke Peter von Biron abdicated, dissolving the duchy into the Courland Governorate.
