Duchy of Burgundy

880 – 1477
DuchyEurope

A powerful apanage duchy of the French crown that, under the Valois dukes of Burgundy, assembled a vast composite state from Flanders to Burgundy rivalling France itself in wealth and military power.

Reverted to the French crown in 1477 after the death of Duke Charles the Bold at the Battle of Nancy, as the male Valois-Burgundy line was extinguished; the broader Burgundian inheritance in the Low Countries and Franche-Comté passed to the Habsburg dynasty through Charles's daughter Mary of Burgundy.
