Early medieval Přemyslid duchy centered on Prague Castle, formed c.870 out of the disintegrating Great Moravian realm after Duke Spytihněv swore fealty to the East Frankish king Arnulf in 895. A principality of the Holy Roman Empire through the 10th century.
Continued under Přemyslid rule until raised to a hereditary kingdom, formally confirmed by the Golden Bull of Sicily in 1212 (the ducal-to-royal transition is usually dated from Duke Ottokar I's 1198 elevation).
